Arthur Hatton in the running for grant money to expand community/school garden

KAMLOOPS — Arthur Hatton Elementary School is in the running for a $15,000 grant through Nature’s Path’s Gardens for Good contest. 

The school of nearly 300 students has been learning about gardening, nutrition and the local food system over the last two years by tending to a number of garden boxes. 

Grade 5/6 teacher Paul Denby says he hopes to expand the program in order to help out community members in need.

“Our first thought was to lease out the plot, and now that we’re this deep into it what we would like to do is actually donate a plot each year to a different family, or to a family that’s in need so that they can use that garden box throughout the course of the year to create things for their family.” Denby said. 

The grant money would also help expand the program to include all grade levels.

The Gardens for Good contest is open to voters until October 15th. 

“We thought it was one vote per day per person, and it’s not. It’s just one vote. So, that’s why we really have to get the word out and spread it as far as we can, not only within Kamloops, but in outlying communities as well.” 

The top nine gardens will move on to phase two of the contest.
