More than 100 Dufferin Elementary School students stung by wasps

KAMLOOPS — Chaos at Dufferin Elementary School today as 135 students were stung by wasps during the annual Terry Fox Run.

The incident occurred just before lunch on the hillside behind the school, says Principal Colleen Topolovec.

“Some of the students were running a trail we’ve run many times over the last little while and one of them must have disturbed a ground nest with wasps and the nest scattered and spread back through the entire school that was running behind.”

As a result, she says the school called in some medical personnel to help out. Thankfully, she says none of the students appeared to suffer a life-threatening reaction.

“We didn’t have any of our anaphylactic students stung, but we did send two students with parents up to the hospital to observe reactions that they were having, just to be on the safe side.”

In addition to that, Topolovec says a number of other students who were upset by what happened were sent home with their parents.

However, she says classes at the school have since resumed and the nest will be destroyed today.

“School is back in and teachers were absolutely amazing as were parents who came and students toughed it out and were so helpful of each other. So, that was great to see.”
