First Nations call for urgent action on salmon fishery

VANCOUVER —  B-C First Nations say they’re frustrated over what they call “inadequate” strategies by the federal and provincial governments to protect wild salmon.

Several Indigenous groups gathered at a Wild Salmon Summit in Musqueam territory last week to discuss diminishing salmon runs that they say are impacting First Nations’ harvesting rights.

Delegates say the federal government must outline ways to implement First Nations rights to self-determination and self-government as they relate to fish and wild salmon.

Union of B-C Indian Chiefs vice-president Bob Chamberlin says the salmon population losses will soon become irreversible unless urgent action is taken.
