CHASE, B.C. — RCMP say they may never know what caused a fiery crash that killed a young man west of Chase yesterday.

Cst. Mike Halskov of RCMP E-Division Traffic Services says at about 5:00 Sunday morning, about eight kilometres west of Chase, an eastbound car on the Trans Canada Highway crossed over the centre line and struck a westbound semi truck.

The car erupted into a ball of flame.

The man presumed to be the driver was pronounced dead on scene.

He has been identified as a 28 year old from the B.C. Interior, though Halskov would not divulge his name or hometown.

The Trans Canada was closed for seven hours while authorities investigated.

Along with RCMP, the BC Coroners Service and Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement are trying to determine what caused the crash.

Halskov says that will be a difficult task.

“There were no signs that it was an issue of impairment or anything of that nature. It could possibly have been from distracted driving or drowsiness, but we may never know the actual cause,” said Halskov.

“Suffice to say, it was a tragic collision with a tragic outcome.”
