KAMLOOPS — A Kamloops lawyer and former federal NDP candidate is returning to his roots, thanks to an appointment by B.C.’s provincial government.

Bill Sundhu has been selected for a seat on UBC’s Board of Governors and completed a two-day orientation last week.

“It is a one-year appointment initially, which is standard, to determine whether I’m suitable for the position and whether I like it, whether it’s a good fit,” he tells CFJC Today.

“I’m passionate and motivated in this regard because I’m an alma mater (alumnus) of UBC, I got my first degree there. And it’s a world-leading university and we know that post-secondary education is very important to the well-being of our society and progress of our country.”

Sundhu adds he plans to “bring the fullness” of his background as a lawyer, a former judge, and work on Indigenous and non-discrimination issues to the work.

However, he says the appointment doesn’t mean he’s no longer interested in the possibility for running for the federal NDP in next year’s election.

“I continue to consult people. I am mulling it over; I haven’t made a firm decision but clearly as we go into 2019 a decision will have to be made. I still have the passion and the concern about the direction of our country and the needs of our region and community.”

Sundhu ran for the NDP in Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo in the 2015 federal election and finished second.

The next federal election is scheduled for Oct. 21, 2019.
