CHASE, B.C. — UPDATE (11:00 a.m.): Drive BC says the road has re-opened to single lane, alternating traffic.

UPDATE (10:15 a.m.): RCMP and the BC Coroners Service are investigating a fatal crash west of Chase.

According to Sgt. Janelle Shoihet with RCMP E-Divison Communications, the crash took place along the Trans Canada about eight kilometres west of Chase, at about 5:00 a.m. Sunday.

A semi-tractor collided with a car at that spot.

“When our officers arrived, they found that the driver of the semi truck was still inside the vehicle with what are believed to be non-life threatening but serious injuries. The driver of the other vehicle was pronounced deceased at the scene,” said Shoihet.

The cause of the collision is under investigation, and Shoihet says it could take some time to get the highway back open.

She notes a collision analyst and reconstructionist arrived at the scene at about 9:30 a.m., and will have to complete their investigation while the route remains closed.

Shoihet says BC Hydro lines were also affected by the crash, and crews will need to ensure they are out of the way before traffic can move through.

The identity of the victim has not been released.

Those wishing to travel through the area should consult Drive BC for information about opening times and detours.
