KAMLOOPS — The Independent Investigation Office of B.C. has completed its forensic examination into last week’s officer involved-shooting in Kamloops.

The shooting occurred last Friday (Sept. 14) afternoon about three kilometres past the Rose Hill Subdvision.

Police responded just after 4:30 p.m. after receiving a report of a suspicious and possibly impaired man last seen near a camper. Police attended the location and there was a reported exchange of gunfire, ultimately leading to the death of the man.

“All the work on the scene we’ve done our forensic examination and we’ve collected material from the RCMP with respect to the movements of the vehicles and certain video that they had,” says Chief Civilian Director Ron MacDonald.

“We’ve interviewed many witnesses, both civilian and police and we’re taking all that information and other information into our investigation and we’ll be assessing it over the coming several weeks and following up where we need to.”

He said he couldn’t reveal any information about the deceased, who they’ve identified, or what exactly happened.

“We won’t be making any comments about that until of course we’ve had a chance to analyze everything to make sure we get it right.”

So, when can the public expect to see a final report on the matter?

“Every file is a little different. We’ve certainly improved our timelines. But we’ll go as quickly as we can and be as thorough as we need to be,” said MacDonald. “At the end of the day, if we don’t refer this matter to the Crown for charges we will be issuing a public report which will tell the public all the relevant details so they’ll know what happened.”
