KAMLOOPS — Come October 17 recreational marijuana will be legal, but there will only be one B.C. cannabis store in operation, and it will be in Kamloops.

The B.C. Liquor Distribution Branch put out a call for employees in July.

Now, around 20 employees are receiving training ahead of the official opening of the first government-operated recreational cannabis store in B.C.

“We’ve been in Kamloops for a couple of weeks doing some training, focusing on social responsibility, different things like product knowledge, and of course customer service skills as well,” said Kate Bilney, stakeholder communications specialist with BCLDB.

The BCLDB is investigating possible locations across the province for future cannabis stores.

For now, everything is on track for an Oct. 17 opening of the Kamloops store.

Construction is currently underway at the Columbia Place Shopping Centre.

“We’re designing our stores to be very bright and clean and open, of course with a massive focus on social responsibility,” Bilney said. “We’re aiming to provide the best customer service experience possible and I think our customers will be very pleased when our doors do open on October 17.”
