Tickets still available for VW Turtle River Race

KAMLOOPS — Little green turtles will hit the water this weekend, competing for some impressive prizes during the VW Turtle River Race.

The annual fundraising event involves the release of thousands of toy turtles into the South Thompson River, each belonging to a ticket holder hoping to win one of the grand prizes, which include two tickets anywhere WestJet flies and a trip for two on the Rocky Mountaineer.

Proceeds from the ticket sales will be donated to youth education programming at Western Canada Theatre.

“That includes our Stage One Theatre School where we are able to bring kids into theatre classes, to teach public speaking, critical and creative thinking, and skill development at all the different levels and ages,” said WCT Managing Director Evan Klassen.

“It also supports our high school matinee program where again students are able to come to the theatre, are able to take in a performance, and it helps support the activities such as study guides that are given to the teachers ahead of time.”

The races will take place at Riverside Park Saturday from noon to 3 p.m.

Tickets will be available on the day of the race, but people are encouraged to purchase their tickets prior to the big day.

“We have a couple of opportunities,” Klassen said, “you can call VW Kamloops, they have people standing by on the phones ready to take your order for Turtle Race tickets. There are still tickets available for both of the races. Alternately, at Western Canada Theatre we have our premiere of our new play Kamloopa that starts on Thursday this week, and we’ll be selling Turtle Race tickets at Kamloopa as well.”
