OTTAWA — A strike at Canada Post is one step closer to reality.

This after the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) confirmed today its members voted overwhelmingly in favour of strike action.

CUPW says votes were held across Canada between Aug. 7 and Sept. 9, and provisional numbers show 98.3 per cent of urban workers and 95.9 per cent of rural workers showed support for their bargaining committee.

It all means CUPW will be in a legal position to strike as of Sept. 26 if the parties cannot reach an agreement.

CUPW President Mike Pelecek says the vote shows “this is the time to address serious workplace problems.”

He says it’s also time to look at renewing the post office with expanded services that include postal banking, grocery delivery and greening the postal fleet and office.

After months of bargaining between both sides, CUPW says Canada Post presented “global offers to the union, the first time the Corporation has offered any position on the issues.”

“And these offers simply weren’t good enough,” says Pelacek.

He adds CUPW negotiators continue to worth with Canada Post to try and find an agreement.
