KAMLOOPS — A big change for Grade 10 students province-wide, including in Kamloops, this year.

The province has officially launched its new curriculum for Grade 10 students, something it says will be both more innovative and flexible, and help better prepare kids for college, university and the workforce.

According to the Ministry of Education, the curriculum will offer more personalized learning opportunities and focus on hands-on learning and help build critical thinking and communication skills.

The change has the endorsement of Kamloops-Thompson Teachers’ Association President Amanda Jensen.

“The new curriculum is a lot about project-based learning, a lot about students choosing topics that they want to discuss and showing their learning through different avenues,” she says.

Are teachers ready for the change?

“I don’t know if you’re ever really quote, unquote ready for something that’s new,” Jensen says. “I know it’s sort of an evolving thing that’s going to happen over the course of the evolution of the curriculum and I know that teachers will implement the new curriculum the best that they can to begin with but it will certainly take some time to fully implement it.”

One aspect of the new curriculum she’s sure will benefit the kids, is the inclusion of Indigenous content.

“Absolutely. And I think that’s something teachers have been trying to integrate more into their lessons as Truth and Reconciliation and those sorts of concerns are coming to light and we’re starting to talk about more.”

The changes follow the successful implementation of the new curriculum introduced recently for Kindergarten to Grade 9 students.
