KAMLOOPS — Work on BC Hydro’s Valleyview Project has been halted until further notice after workers found a bone on site.

Communications spokesperson Megan Chadwick says crews working on the project made the discovery while excavating on Aug. 17. It was later confirmed by RCMP and the BC Coroners Service that the bone “is not recent in origin.”

“BC Hydro follows a heritage chance find procedure — a process that stops work immediately if a potential artifact or heritage object is discovered at a work site,” she says. “British Columbia’s archaeological sites are protected under our province’s Heritage Conservation Act. All further ground disturbing work in the immediate area has been stopped while we collaborate with Indigenous groups and provincial agencies.”

She adds archaeologists retained BC Hydro are now working with Tk’emlups te Secwepemc and the Archaeology Branch of the BC Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Operations and Rural Development to learn more about the nature of the site.
