KAMLOOPS — The Kamloops RCMP didn’t have to go far to nab a man for impaired driving this weekend.

Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says an out-of-town visitor from northern B.C. received a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and had his vehicle impounded after attempting to park in the downtown Kamloops RCMP detachment parking lot.

“Just after midnight on August 18, a police officer saw that a male was having difficulty trying to park a Ford F-350 pickup truck behind the police station,” she says. “When questioned by the officer as to why he drove into a secure parking lot with visible signs saying it was closed to the public, the driver said he had no idea he had pulled into a police station.”

Shelkie says the driver had “an overpowering odour of liquor coming from his breath and showed other signs of impairment,” prompting the presiding police officer to employ a road-side screening device.
