KAMLOOPS — Crews are making good progress containing fires menacing the southern portion of the Cariboo Fire Centre this week.

Fire Information Officer Robin Clark says both the 300-hectare Mayfield Lake Fire south of Williams Lake and the 440-hectare Lang Lake Fire north of Canim Lake are 70 per cent contained and 100 per cent guarded.

The monstrous, 7,228-hectare Wild Goose Lake Fire west of Clinton is also 70 per cent contained, and Clark says 56 firefighters are working diligently to bring it fully under control.

“Yesterday, we didn’t see any growth on this fire,” said Clark. “However, it was producing a little bit more smoke that was visible to the surrounding communities. That was attributed to heavy timber continuing to smoulder. The fire is well within the perimeter and the fire guard.”

“Ground crews are continuing direct attack on the wildfire where it’s safe to do so. Weather conditions permitting, there is a planned ignition on the southeastern corner on the fire. That will be to remove
unburned fuels and reinforced the guard on that flank of the fire.”

In the Kamloops Fire Centre, there are 71 active fires, but Fire Information Officer Marla Catherall confirms the local Kamloops area has some of the lowest fire danger ratings in the province.

“Kamloops right now is at a moderate fire danger rating. But once you get into the southern end of the fire centre, it does go from high to extreme,” said Catherall. “Extreme is Princeton and close to Osoyoos.”
