Heat expected today but showers this weekend in Kamloops

KAMLOOPS — Kamloops is expected to flirt with another weather record today but we’re in for a big change this weekend.

Environment Canada Meteorologist Doug Lundquist says highs could hit 38 today – just shy of the record set this day in 1981 when it hit 38.7 degrees.

But he says once the ridge of high pressure lifts tonight, things will cool down drastically.

“There’s a cold front for tonight and into the weekend. It’s actually the remnants of an upper-low off the coast of Washington and Oregon that’s going to head over us. We’re actually forecasting Saturday night into Sunday just outright showers.”

He says there could be some thunderstorms embedded with those showers which are worrisome.

“That has me concerned in that it’s been dry so long, and if we get some really heavy rain in some places, we could see some localized flash flooding with much cooler weather into the mid-20’s.”

Lundquist says with the amount of rain we’re expecting in Kamloops he’s not too concerned about potential lightning strikes but says other areas are more vulnerable where less rain is expected – places like Williams Lake, towards Kelowna and the Kootenays.

He says starting next week things will warm up as the ridge tries to build in though.

“Not nearly as strong, but getting back into the 30s.”

Yesterday, Kamloops broke a century-old weather record when it hit 40.8 degrees.
