KAMLOOPS — It’s been a special week for the Niles brothers from Kamloops. Adam Niles is competing at the B.C. Men’s Amateur Championship at Rivershore, his home course, while Ben Niles is caddying for his little brother.

“Having someone I can talk to out there, talk about if I’m playing bad and take my mind off it. Or if I’m playing good, then keep me calm,” said Adam, who wasn’t allowed a caddy at the B.C. Junior Boys Championship last week at the Kamloops Golf and Country Club.

Ben, who’s back in Kamloops this summer after his first season with the MacEwan University men’s basketball team, is enjoying the time spent with Adam.

“It’s a great atmosphere to see him doing so well at this level for golf, and to be out here on the course with him is really great, to watch him play so well, and to be able to help with that,” he said.

The two have always been close with a great relationship, despite a three-year gap between them, and they both like to joke around, on and off the golf course.

“When I’m out there, I like to keep it light-hearted, the spirits high,” noted Ben. “Just don’t let it get too serious because if it gets too serious he might get down on himself. Just keep it upbeat.”

Adam added, “If I hit a bad shot, he’ll say it’s a good shot to keep me calm. Help me with the greens a little bit if I’m struggling.”

Ben played golf at a high level, also playing as a junior at Rivershore where they grew up together. But he knew early on that Adam was the better of the two.

“I have a lot of pride in it. I feel really good about what he’s able to do because I’ve watched him grow through it,” said Ben about Adam’s golf accomplishments to date. “I remember we started playing golf at the same time when he was three years younger than me, and he was already almost as good as me, and now he’s on another level.”

Ben and Adam don’t get to see each other all that often anymore with Ben playing away in Edmonton playing university ball, but when they’re together they make the most of it.

“A lot of jokes,” said Ben. “Jokes that we both get, like inside jokes, and just being able to joke around and know everything we’re talking about. It’s always good to joke on the course.”

Adam said, “I love it. He caddied for me at the U.S. Junior qualifier in Idaho. It’s lots of fun having him out there.”
