SUN PEAKS, B.C. — Residents beware: another phone scam is making the rounds.

The latest scam targeted Sun Peaks resident Robb Blaney, with the fraudster claiming to be with “the fire department.”

“They called mid-afternoon yesterday (Tuesday),” said Blaney. “A fellow said he was with the fire department, he didn’t say which area and said that he was glad he finally got a hold of me.”

Then Blaney says the caller made his pitch to see if Blaney would donate some money.

“And that they were really in need of funds right now. I mentioned to them it had been an expensive month and that I didn’t have a lot of and he said ‘well, we always have ways of coming up with money when we need it and there’s times when we’re really tight and we always manage to come up with money’ and I said but I’m really broke right now.”

After that, Blaney says he hung up and called Kamloops Fire Rescue with an uneasy feeling this morning that it had to be a scam.

“They said they absolutely don’t ask for money over the phone.”

He said he contacted the media because he’s concerned others will be targeted.

“This is not legit and people need to know there’s another phone scam out there because once you give out your banking information, what’s to say they won’t take all your money?”
