Soggy conditions close sports fields at McArthur Island

KAMLOOPS — Excessive rainfall has prompted the City of Kamloops to close all sports fields at McArthur Island Park until further notice.

“We are concerned about player safety as well as potential long-term damage to the turf if we leave it open,” says Parks and Civic Facilities Manager Jeff Putnam, who notes the decision will be reassessed Tuesday morning.

“Unfortunately, the river level is high so the water doesn’t have a lot of places to go on McArthur Island because it’s fairly low,” he says. “So, it doesn’t drain as well as some of the other areas in town like the Tournament Capital Ranch, which will remain open for the remainder of the slo-pitch tournament there.”

Putnam says conditions have forced the cancellation of all remaining Canada Day Classic ballgames.
