KAMLOOPS — Thursday was a busy day in the Kamloops Fire Centre.

Fire Information Officer Marla Catherall says 28 new fires were sparked in total, including the largest — a 60 hectare blaze which forced the evacuation of 12 homes — in Batchelor Heights.

Thankfully, that fire is now well in hand.

“That fire is classified as under control and 100 per cent contained. The BC Wildfire Service has handed this back to Kamloops Fire Rescue as it is in their jurisdiction. But, great effort by everyone on site last night.”

She says most of the lightning-sparked fires were spot fires and have been contained. Catherall says the largest one burning now is the 21 hectare West of Tunkwa Lake fire between Logan Lake and Savona.

“It’s classified as out of control and the BC Wildfire Service has 30 personnel responding today.”

As for the outlook, she says there is some “erratic winds in the forecast today” which will be followed up by hot and dry conditions Saturday and possible thunder and lightning Sunday night.

If you see a fire you are asked to call 1 (800) 663-5555 or *5555 on your cell phone.
