Government says it won’t eliminate B.C. Homeowner Grant

VICTORIA —   A task force is recommending that B-C introduces a tax for sugary drinks and eliminates the provincial homeowner’s grant.

Finance Minister Carole James formed the task force last fall to provide advice on how to eliminate medical services premiums and replace the estimated 2 billion loss in annual revenues.

She later introduced M-S-P reforms including an employers health tax before receiving the report, which was written by experts in finance, law and public policy.

A statement from the ministry of finance yesterday says changing the homeowner’s grant is not under consideration, nor is returning to a harmonized sales tax, but it did not comment on other recommendations in the report.
