Minimum wage hike goes into effect today

VICTORIA — A pay raise kicks in for approximately 400,000 British Columbians today.

Victoria is raising the minimum wage by a $1.30 per hour to $12.65 per hour — an 11.5 per cent increase.

Liquor servers will also see a substantial increase of 12.9 per cent to $11.40 per hour.

Resident caretakers and live-in camp leaders will get an 11.5 per cent bump to $759.32 for those that manage from nine to 60 units, or $2,586.40 for 61 or more units.

The live-in home support worker, alternate minimum wage will be eliminated. Workers in this category will now be paid the general minimum wage.

The increases are the result of recommendations made in the Independent Fair Wages Commission, established in the fall of 2017.

By June 2021, British Columbia’s general minimum wage will rise to at least $15.20 per hour, and the separate lower liquor server wage will be eliminated.
