Allie Lake fire completely contained, area restriction remains in place

SAVONA, B.C. — One of the largest fires of the young B.C. wildfire season is no longer a concern.

The BC Wildfire Service says the Allie Lake wildfire north of Savona is now 100 per cent contained.

Fire Information Officer Jody Lucius says after weeks of hot and dry conditions, the weather is finally lending a hand.

“The crews have been working hard over the last several days to get machine and hand guard in place around that fire, and that’s obviously helping to contain the fire. The fire did also receive more than seven millimetres of rain last night and certainly that’s helped with their efforts,” said Lucius.

The TNRD lifted all evacuation orders and alerts around the fire yesterday, but Lucius says the previously-enacted area restriction will remain in place until further notice.

“For the safety of the public and in order to enable our crews to continue to do the work that they need to do over the coming days and weeks, that area restriction does remain in place,” said Lucius. “We do ask that the public respect it and allow those crews to get the job done.”

The size of the blaze totals just over 2,700 hectares.

One out-building was destroyed by the flames, but no other structures are believed to have been damaged.

Even with the fire completely contained, Lucius says firefighters still have a lot of work to do to ensure it doesn’t pop up again.

“Certainly, we’re not backing away from this fire. It is important to us that we go in and make sure all those hot spots are out and that this fire doesn’t become a problem later in the season if we do end up with hot and dry conditions throughout the summer.”
