CLEARWATER — Mounties have released more details regarding the tragic death of a child in Clearwater.

RCMP Staff Sgt. Annie Linteau says the boy died following a collision with a semi truck at approximately 8:45 a.m. Tuesday.

“A nine year old boy was riding his bicycle near the intersection of Park Drive and Clearwater Village Road when it appears he was unable to slow down his bicycle,” she says. “The boy went off road and collided with a semi truck which was travelling south west on Clearwater Village Road. The boy was thrown from his bicycle and sustained injuries.”

She says several witnesses, including an off-duty RCMP member immediately rendered first aid to the boy but he succumbed to his injuries in hospital a short time later.

“This is a tragic incident for our community,” says Clearwater RCMP Detachment Commander Sgt. Grant Simpson. “Support is being provided to all those who have been impacted by this incident.”

The boy was a student at Raft River Elementary School in Clearwater. Principal Lori Bradstock wrote on the school’s website Tuesday that counsellors will be on hand when staff speak with students today.

NOTE: The boy’s family has contacted CFJC News to correct the report of the boy’s age. He was eight years old.
