WILLIAMS LAKE — B.C. Education Minister Rob Fleming has appointed a special advisor to the Cariboo-Chilcotin School District.

In a letter to all teachers in the district, Cariboo-Chilcotin Teachers’ Association (CCTA) President Murray Helmer says Mike McKay will serve in the role of special advisor “for the balance of this calendar year and into 2019.”

He says McKay’s role will be to “assist the district in developing collaborative approaches and positive results to address the recommendations from Dr. Dianne Turner’s recent report.”

As CFJC Today reported last Friday, Turner’s report found staff morale in the district is at an all-time low

McKay, who retired from the superintendent’s role in the Surrey School District five years ago, will be in the Cariboo on Wednesday, along with Assistant Deputy Minister Keith Godin for meetings.

“They will be meeting with Partner Group representatives for introductions and to begin to develop the kind of working relationship that will be essential for the health and success at the district.”

Turner’s report was sparked by a vote of non-confidence in the superintendent, secretary-treasurer and school board trustees by the CCTA last year.

The union alleged financial mismanagement noting the district wasn’t complying with last year’s BCTF Supreme Court of Canada ruling concerning class size and composition.

The school district denied the allegations last week noting their finances are audited on a regular basis and on par with other school districts in the province.
