MERRITT — Firefighting personnel are getting the upper hand on the Chataway Lake fire.

“The BC Wildfire Service is responding with 27 personnel including contract crews,” says Communications Assistant Marla Catherall with the Kamloops Fire Centre. “The fire is now 100 per cent machine guarded and the ground crews are working on wrapping the fire with a hose line.”

Though the fire has been remapped from 40 hectares Monday to 65 today, Catherall says that doesn’t necessarily mean its grown, but rather the mapping today is more accurate.

The suspected human-caused blaze broke out over the weekend and is located 27 kilometres northwest of Merritt.
