KAMLOOPS —Update: All evacuation orders have been rescinded says Michelle Nordstrom, EOC information officer with the Thompson-Nicola Regional District.

“Based on our communications with the wildfire services on the ground their latest reports are saying that the wildfire is now 35 per cent contained and they’re able to get a good handle on things down there.”

She says 51 properties were affected by the evacuation alert and another 14 affected by the order.

“And with the order 25-30 people were affected.”

Earlier: Minimal growth on the Allie Lake wildfire north of Savona has the BC Wildfire Service feeling optimistic.

“We’re continuing to have good success on the fire,” says Fire Information Officer Heather Rice. “The cold front that went through yesterday, the forecasted winds didn’t really materialize, which helped our firefighters out immensely.”

Overall, she says crews had “good success in establishing guard around the south half of the fire,” which is now 35 per cent contained.

Today, she says firefighting efforts will be focused on the north flank of the fire setting up guardlines while continuing to hit hot spots with any skimmers if need be.

“It was quiet enough yesterday that after our morning bucketing we were able to even stop bucketing so we could continue to work hard on the ground and do hand attacks on the blaze.”

Despite the success, Rice says the fire grew slightly from 2,700 hectares to 2,739 hectares though no new structures have been lost since an outbuilding was last on day one.

She adds the evacuation orders and alerts will remain in place until further notice and asks the public to respect the area restriction in the area to ensure the safety of firefighters and the general public.

The suspected human-caused blaze started last week.
