Lulay overcoming another injury at training camp, feels he has “good football” left

KAMLOOPS — Travis Lulay is the epitome of the old saying it’s not whether you get knocked down, it’s whether you get back up. He’s suffered numerous career-threatening injuries, but he keeps getting back up.

“It’s part of the deal, right. What I can’t control is whether my body holds up on game day,” said Lulay. “What I can control is how I respond to it, and my attitude about it and my work ethic towards improving.”

Lulay was one of the feel good stories of 2017, leading the Lions at quarterback after Jonathon Jennings struggled. But then came Sept. 8, a home game against Montreal when he tore his ACL. While many players may have retired, not Travis Lulay. Lulay says he loves the game too much to shut it down.

“To be fair, I considered [retirement],” he said. “I considered all my options at the end of the year. But what it came down to for me is, playing last year I felt like I still had some good football left in me.”

The entire team, including head coach Wally Buono, is inspired by what Lulay’s done in overcoming all these injuries.

“If anybody’s ever dealt with personal pain through an injury, they can realize how at times it’s so demoralizing, puts you in a state of depression,” said Buono. “It just really has a tremendous effect on you, and for him to go through it that many times but still come out, be positive, still enjoy what he enjoys, and still compete.”

Lulay got a break in the last two training camps, healthy during both, after shoulder rehabs in 2014 and 2015. This year, Lulay has been cautious with his knee, throwing lightly and taking the rest when needed.

“The knee’s coming,” he noted. “It’s a process. This is the final phase I guess in recovery, getting out on the field and making those on-field movements. Training camp’s allowing me to do that.”

Buono says the plan is to keep Lulay out of the first preseason game, June 1 in Calgary, and see how the knee is progressing.
