WolfPack recognized as CCBC hands out awards

KAMLOOPS — Tyler Moskalyk might have been in his first year with the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack and the Canadian Collegiate Baseball Conference but he made an impression.

The 6’2” right hander from Thunder Bay, Ontario captured the CCBC most strike out award as the league held its annual banquet at the McArthur Island Sports Center on Wednesday night (May 9).

Moskalyk fanned 67 batters while pitching in 56.2 innings, with a record of 2-3, earned run average of 3.01, surrendering 52 hits, striking out 67 and walking 10.

He was one of three members of the WolfPack named to the CCBC first all-star team.  The others were Vance Fode (Bow Island, AB) at designated hitter and Josh Hillis (Calgary, AB) as utilityman.   Both players were second team all-stars in 2017.  Fode played in 29 games and had 89 at bats, with 25 hits, two doubles, four homers, 25 runs batted in, striking out 12 times and walking 16 times for an average of .281.

The multi-faceted Hillis played outfield, infield and even pitched in the preseason.  The fifth year WolfPack hit .300 in 31 games. He had 120 at bats, scored 28 runs, had 36 hits, six doubles with one homer. He brought in 18 runs while walking 21 times, striking out 19 times and having four stolen bases.

Pitchers Tyler Hodder (Fort McMurray, AB) and Dillon Ferguson (Kirkland, WA) were both selected to the CCBC second all-star team.  

This was Hodder’s third straight selection to the all-star squad (he was a first team all-star in 2017). Hodder had a 2-2 record with nine complete games, pitching 62.1 innings, striking out 54, walking 26 and surrendering 61 hits. His earned run average was 3.61,

Its Ferguson’s first time as a CCBC all-star selection. He was 5-1 with an earned run average of 3.60. He started four games, and pitched 35 innings striking out 43, walking 15 and surrendering 34 hits.

As the league handed out its hardware, one other player with ties to Kamloops was honored.  First baseman Riley Jepson of the University of Fraser Valley was the top hitter.  The former Kamloops Sun Devil and Midget Riverdog had 90 at bats hitting .489 with three homers, two triples, nine doubles, had 44 hits, 11 strike outs and 27 walks while driving in 25.  Jepson was also named to the CCBC first all-star team.

Three members of the Okanagan College Coyotes captured major awards.Right hander Trevor Brigden of Toronto, Ontario was the CCBC’s top pitcher with a 3-0 record, earned run average of 1.17, 43 strikeouts while surrendering eight walks and nine hits.

Coyotes teammate, infielder Brandon Graham had the most homers with five.  He hit .236 with six doubles, three triples and 11 walks in 110 at bats.  The Prince George, BC native added 23 runs batted in.  His Okanagan College teammate Jared Frew of Okotoks, Alberta had the most runs batted in with 35.

Frew had 101 at bats, hitting .287 with four homers, a triple and 10 doubles.

  The other major award winner wasKai Poffenroth (Bentley, AB)  of the Prairie Baseball Academy Dawgs was had the most wins. He went 6-1 with an earned run average of 4.73.  He pitched 32.1 innings, striking out 26, giving up 38 hits and 14 walks.

Among the team awards, Prairie Baseball Academy had the top team batting average (.299) while Okanagan College took home the top team earned run average (3.80).

The rest of the all-star teams looked like this:

The first team had four members of the regular season champion PBA Dawgs on it:  outfielders Daltan Wells (Saskatoon, SK) and David Leblanc (Leduc,AB) , catcher Jaret Semeniuk (Edmonton, AB) and pitcher Liam Sabistion (Calgary, AB). Okanagan College’s first team all-stars were second baseman Noah Wood-Jolivet (Whitby, ON), outfielder Davis Todosichuk (Kelowna, BC) and Brigden.   The University of Calgary Dinos had two players on the first all-star team as well:  pitcher Jordan Smith (Calgary, AB) and third baseman Cam Williams (Coquitlam, BC).   Fraser Valley’s reps were shortstop Colin Kellington (Chilliwack, BC) and Jepson.

The second all-star team had four PBA players: designated hitter Chris Ewanik (Spruce Grove, AB), utility man Ethan McGregor (Langley, BC), first baseman Kevin Floyd (Calgary, AB) and outfielder Eric Davies (Picture Butte, AB).   Okanagan College had three players: outfielder Trevor Mlait (West Kelowna, BC), pitcher Christ Wyslobocki  (Toronto, ON) and second baseman Erick Junnola (Okotoks, AB).   The Vancouver Island Baseball Institute had three selections: catcher Lucas Galloway (Altario, AB), shortstop Brodan Bydeweg (Langley, BC), third baseman Liam Balance (Parksville, BC) and outfielder Devin Heck (Camrose, AB) while the lone Fraser Valley player on the second team was pitcher Dylan Emmons (Vernon, BC).

Play begins in the six team round robin Thursday morning (May 10) at Norbrock Stadium at 10 AM PDT with Okanagan College facing Fraser Valley. The opening ceremonies are set for 7 PM PDT.  The WolfPack play their first game at 1 pm PDT against Fraser Valley and then meet the PBA Dawgs in the feature game at 7:30 pm PDT.  The Dawgs are the seven time defending champs.
