ICBC & police launch high-risk driving campaign

KAMLOOPS — Motorists beware.

ICBC and police launched a month-long, high-risk driving campaign today.

High-risk driving behaviours under the microscope will include speeding, failing to yield right of way, following too closely, ignoring a traffic control device, distracted driving and improper passing.

ICBC says such behaviours resulted in 330,000 crashes in 2016 which worked out to 900 crashes per day.

The cost of those claims are “ballooning,” according to the public auto insurer and costing $3 billion a year.

A province-wide enforcement blitz will take place on May 19.

“Really, what we’d like to do is to remind drivers on the road that will all have a responsibility to play in making our roads safer,” says Ingrid Brakop, road safety and community coordinator with ICBC.

On average, she says 42 people are killed every year in the Southern Interior from crashes involving high-risk driving.
