KAMLOOPS — RCMP say a woman caught on video driving in the wrong lanes of the Trans Canada Highway east of Kamloops last week was experiencing a medical issue.

Kieron Brandsma caught the Mercedes SUV on his dashcam on the afternoon of April 25, heading westbound in the eastbound lanes near Monte Creek.

The driver sped past Brandsma seconds after he had returned to the right lane after passing a motorhome.

Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says RCMP tracked the driver down a short time later.

“The person was confused. They had a medical issue. They were confused and ended up on the wrong side of the highway,” said Shelkie.

“There were no accidents and nobody was injured, luckily. The driver was spoken to and we feel confident that there’s no possibility that this will happen in the future.”

Shelkie says it’s fortunate the woman did not cause a collision.

“The wrong lane of any road is dangerous, but especially on the Trans Canada Highway. There’s a lot of traffic so that can be dangerous,” said Shelkie.

“It’s something you can’t plan for, if there’s a medical issue. It’s no fault of the person’s that this happened.”
