Merritt mayor confident in city’s flood preparations

MERRITT, B.C. — The City of Merritt is bracing for potential flooding as one of several Interior communities under a flood watch.

Mayor Neil Menard says he personally checked water levels at the Nicola and Coldwater rivers Saturday morning. 

“I just finished taking a check of both of the rivers,” Menard said. “They’re both up, still within their banks which is good. We’re keeping a very close eye on it. So far so good.”

Menard says the city has brought in sand and bags in case residents should need to protect their properties.

“You never know with Mother Nature,” he said, “but, we think we’re ready for it and hopefully we can do as good a job or better than we did last year.”
