Janet Austin sworn in as B.C.’s 30th lieutenant governor

VICTORIA — Pomp and circumstance was on full display in B.C.’s legislature Tuesday afternoon as Janet Austin was sworn in as British Columbia’s 30th lieutenant governor.

Chief Justice Robert J. Bauman administered Austin’s Oath of Allegiance and Oaths of Office before members of the legislative assembly, dignitaries, family and friends.

One of her first duties was to inspect a 100-person guard of honour at the front of the Parliament Buildings. She also received a 15-gun salute.

The lieutenant governor is appointed by the governor general on the advice of the prime minister and serves a term of at least five years. Austin succeeds the Nicola Valley’s very own Judith Guichon.
