Crews respond to wildfire near Lytton

LYTTON — Wildfire crews are busy responding to a four-hectare blaze near Lytton, the first significant wildfire of the year in B.C.

Fire Information Officer Jody Lucius says smoke is visible from nearby communities as well as Highway 12 and Highway 1.

“The cause is unknown at this time but we believe it is human-caused.”

Lucius adds the wildfire is not related to prescribed burning scheduled for the area. Lucius says that burning has not yet begun.

She says the fire is not unusual for this time of year either.

“Especially in Lytton where the snow cover hasn’t been as thick as what we’ve seen in the Kamloops area.”

Lucius says the fire is one of a number of small fires they’ve seen in the area over the past couple of weeks.
