Fire chief: Controlled burns not a cause for concern in 70 Mile House

KAMLOOPS — It appears the memories of last year’s devastating wildfires are fraying some nerves in the 70 Mile House area.

70 Mile House Volunteer Fire Chief Lee Lundy says controlled slash burns yesterday along Highway 97 near town got locals hearts beating a little faster than normal.

“The winds picked up, got them (flames) blowing up pretty good, everything was still within control,” he says. “What happened was the media got a hold of it, saw pictures of it and blew it out of proportion. They thought the whole town was burning down basically.”

Lundy says that was definitely not the case and notes the slash burns are actually a preventative measure taken to help mitigate any problems that may occur this year.
