KAMLOOPS — Area E Director Byron Kemp with the Cariboo Regional District has died at the age of 78.

The CRD confirmed the tragic news in a news release this afternoon.

Kemp represented the South Lakeside-Dog Creek area in the central Cariboo southwest of Williams Lake.

The CRD says Kemp passed away Monday night. No cause of death has been revealed, though he had been absent from the board since last June for health reasons.

Kemp was first elected as Area E director in 1999 and served four terms with the CRD.

Prior to his career in local politics, he was vice-principal of Anne Stevenson Junior Secondary School in the 1970s. He later served as a senior administrator at other area schools. The CRD says he was also a school counsellor at Thompson Rivers University in Williams Lake at one time and founded the Williams Lake Rugby Club.

“Byron’s dedication and commitment to his electoral area and the broader community is an inspiration,” said CRD Chair Margo Wagner. “He leaves behind a tremendous legacy and big shoes to fill.”

Kemp is survived by his wife, their two children, six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
