KAMLOOPS — Update: Kaymen Winter’s lawyer, Matt Ford, responded to CFJC Today’s request for an interview earlier today (Monday) regarding last year’s officer involved shooting in Salmon Arm.

He says “according to the IIO, they will not be recommending charges to Crown Counsel,” in the case. As mentioned earlier Monday, the IIO plans to make its recommendations public in a couple of weeks.

Earlier: It won’t be long before the Independent Investigations Office releases its recommendations in an officer involved shooting in Salmon Arm.

On Jan. 30, 2017, police responded to a theft in progress just after midnight at the Xcalibur Kawasaki and Carwash. An officer shot the suspect, then-22 year old Kaymen Winter, when he tried to flee.

Director, Public Engagement & Policy Marten Youssef told CFJC Today Monday the office will be releasing its report soon.

“We have reached a decision and we will be issuing a public statement in the next couple of weeks.”

Shortly after last year’s incident, Kaymen’s mother Cindy Winter said in a Facebook post her son was unarmed when he was shot.

“I think someone will be paying a pretty penny for firing on an unarmed person,” she said.

At the time, she also said Kaymen had been shot in the head and shoulder and may have brain damage.
