Layoffs at KGHM-Ajax as company contemplates future

KAMLOOPS — KGHM Ajax has issued a trio of layoff notices.

Project Manager Christopher Wild confirmed the news to CFJC Today noting three people have been affected, including Vice-President of External Affairs Yves Lacasse.

Wild notes the layoffs are based “on the decreased amount of work we have to do.”

He adds “due to the sensitivity of the issue” there’s not much more that he can say other than he’s “disappointed in the personnel reductions” while noting that leaves eight employees on the payroll.

Wild says no decision has been made yet on a definitive path forward for the project.

“There’s not a lot of options going forward. We’ve not decided on the course of action yet but the possibilities include going on care and maintenance and re-entering the process at some future date or looking at a judicial review of the decision that was made by the provincial government.”

He says there have been no serious discussions around simply throwing in the towel and giving up.

The government rejected the project due to environmental concerns.
