Winter storms could increase avalanche risk

VANCOUVER —  The winter storm sweeping across south western British Columbia, dumping snow on the mountains north of Vancouver could increase the avalanche risk in the area.

Joe Lammers with Avalanche Canada says anyone venturing into the backcountry over the next few days should be trained in avalanche safety and carry appropriate gear, including shovels, beacons and probes.

Lammers says as much as 50 centimetres of snow is expected to fall on mountains in the South Coast by Friday.

He warns the sunshine forecasted for weekend can be deceiving, as the human-triggered avalanche risk will likely remain high.
