Garand backstops Blazers over Rebels for win in first WHL start

KAMLOOPS — Dylan Garand made 31 saves in his first Western Hockey League start to backstop the Blazers to a 3-2 win over the Red Deer Rebels.

The 15-year old is on callup from the Delta Hockey Academy while Dylan Ferguson remains with the NHL Vegas Golden Knights on emergency call-up.

Jermaine Loewen scored his 7th of the season to tie for the team goal scoring lead, giving the Blazers a 1-0 lead after the first.

Jared Dmytriw tied it for Red Deer early in the second, but Joe Gatenby put the Blazers back in the lead on a 5-against-3 power play.

Nick Chyzowski with his 4th made it 3-1 early in the third.

Red Deer added one more with 15 seconds left.

The Blazers are 6-and-3 after starting the season 0-and-9 and are within four points of Vancouver and Prince George, tied for 3rd and 4th in the B.C. Division.
