WESTWOLD, B.C. — UPDATE (4:25 p.m.): This story has been updated here.

UPDATE (9:50 a.m.): There are reports a second vehicle was involved in this crash, and the driver of that vehicle has died. We are working to confirm that report.

EARLIER: A school bus crash has closed Highway 97 at Westwold this morning.

Kamloops-Thompson School District spokesman Robert Koopmans says it’s believed the crash happened at about 7:00 a.m. on slick roads.

“An empty school bus was headed to begin its route picking up children when it was involved in a crash on the highway. The bus was empty, so there were no students on the bus. As we understand it, the driver of the bus is fine,” said Koopmans.

For students still hoping to head to school this morning, Koopmans says help is on the way.

“Alternate plans were put into place that would see another bus in the area pick up these students who have been waiting for that bus ride. As we understand it, though, the highway is still closed. So there could be delays, and it could be a while before that situation resolves itself.”

According to Drive BC, Highway 97 remains closed in the area as of 9:15 a.m.
