KAMLOOPS — Summer may be over but Cariboo residents are still being reminded to properly extinguish their campfires and to adhere to all open burning regulations this Thanksgiving Day long weekend.

“Over the last couple of weeks we’ve been receiving several reports of abandoned campfires throughout the Cariboo Fire Centre,” says Natasha Broznitsky, fire information officer with the Cariboo Fire Centre. “So, for this weekend we are really reminding people if using a campfire that they do have to extinguish it before leaving the area for any length of time. They need to make sure ashes are cold to the touch before they leave.”

She adds Category 2 and Category 3 fires still are prohibited in the Cariboo Fire Centre adding they are continuously reassessing when they can lift those prohibitions.

“We felt it wasn’t prudent to do that in advance of the long weekend as we are expecting gusty winds today and going into the weekend and the gusty winds are not expected to come with a substantial amount of rain.”
