Heffley Bridge construction to start soon

KAMLOOPS —It’s the news Heffley Creek residents have been waiting for.

Construction on a replacement bridge for Old Highway 5 in Heffley Creek will start by the middle of October.

The new bridge became necessary after a culvert beneath the road was heavily damaged by spring flooding.

Darren Crundwell, capital projects manager with the City of Kamloops, says the contract for the work has been awarded to Acres Construction with a total price tag of $2.1 million.

“The actual construction cost was around $1.9 million. We’ve got everything included in that project cost in addition to the cost.”

Can residents in the area expect more delays?

“No, other than construction traffic. There will be a point at which pedestrians can’t get through. We’ll try and accommodate the best we can,” he says. “But once we’ve got the whole road excavated and we’re working down in the riverbed there will be limited access, people will have to go around.”

Crundwell expects the bridge to be open by next February.
