Schools zones in effect as students return to classes

KAMLOOPS — Many students are returning to schools across the city today (Sep. 5), and that means school zones are back in effect.

Drivers are required to slow to 30 kilometres an hour in school zones from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

There will be extra RCMP enforcement in the school zones, and motorists breaking the law can expect a hefty fine.

“People should be aware that we’re out there and we need to enforce the laws, and so tickets could be issued today,” Cpl. Jodi Shelkie said.

In addition to asking drivers to watch their speed and keep an eye out for children, RCMP are asking parents to talk to their children about the hazards of the road.

“Kids often run out or ride their bikes out of their driveways,” Shelkie said, “and that’s frequently a place where it’s away from the school area and so people aren’t slowing down, and they may not be looking for children as much. So just make your children aware that they need to be cautious of traffic around their houses and on the way to school.”
