Firefighters head back to school, extra support brought in

KAMLOOPS — It’s back to the books for many B.C firefighters.

Ryan Turcot with the B.C. Wildfire Service says close to 40 per cent of firefighters contracts expired the end of August.

He says most members are returning to college, university or other commitments.

Luckily the sudden drop in personnel isn’t anything new.

“This is something we plan for every year,” said Turcot. “To help offset the decrease, we’ve brought in an additional 686 out-of-province personnel as well as 1,528 contract personnel to help offset the decrease as we expect the wildfire season to be active for some time.”
