MERRITT — Two people dead after a collision yesterday afternoon on Highway 8 near Merritt.

Central Interior Traffic Services Sergeant Mike Pears says police were called to the highway just east of the Coldwater Road just before 3:00 PM Sunday afternoon.

A motorcycle had collided with an SUV.

Two couples from Washington State were travelling together on their motorcycles and were westbound on Highway 8 when the lead motorcycle, for some reason, crossed the centre line on a right hand curve and hit the eastbound SUV.

The driver of the SUV swerved to try and avoid the collision but was unsuccessful.

The couple on the motorcycle died at the scene. The couple on the following bike were not injured and not involved in the collision. The mother and child in the SUV were treated for minor injuries at Merritt Hospital.

No indication at this point what might have caused the motorcycle to veer into the oncoming lane.
