KAMLOOPS — Glenn Hilke says he sees a deficit in the City of Kamloops leadership department, and he believes he can fill it.

That’s why the non-profit director filed his nomination papers to run for mayor in the September 30 by-election.

“I’ve been concerned about the lack of leadership within the city council, the mayor’s position as well as within the municipal bureaucracy as a whole,” said Hilke.

“That is not across the board, of course, but issues like affordable housing, affordable transportation, downtown economy, North Shore economy, as well as issues that are somewhat related to homelessness and poverty in town that we hear about frequently.”

“It’s a fairly long list right now because the lack of attention and the lack of action to some of these issues has accumulated over the years.”

“The overdose crisis is a major issue in our city right now, and that’s connected to many of the other issues in town.”

Hilke ran for council in 2014, finishing 26th out of 28 candidates.

He says he has the experience and connections to succeed as the mayor of Kamloops.

“I have experience within bureaucracies. I know all of the city councillors very well. I know the senior bureaucrats in the different departments of the city. So I feel comfortable, I feel experienced in terms of the structure of city governance to do this job.”
