KAMLOOPS — The ballot for the September 30 by-election will list at least five candidates running for mayor of Kamloops.

The latest entry into the race is Mike McKenzie, a self-described “local and national youth and community representative.”

He says his campaign won’t focus on specific issues, but rather on his ability to bring the city together.

“I’ve felt that we need somebody like that in the mayor’s seat in Kamloops. Somebody who can facilitate the debate, somebody who can communicate well with others, and most importantly, someone who can connect with most of the demographics and the people around Kamloops,” said McKenzie. “I’ve seen, on various issues, there’s a divide in Kamloops. I’d like to bring that together.”

“Coming here in the next month, we have a good opportunity, not only for me to engage the other candidates, but also to bring what I have to offer in my character and my experience.”

McKenzie says he has worked with political campaigns in years past, but is not partisan.

“With everything that’s going on in the world right now, we need innovation, and we need some capacity to receive some of our most vulnerable peoples at the door. I also think we need options; somebody who can be in the mayor’s seat for some time and potentially grow with Kamloops.”

McKenzie joins Ken Christian, Bill McQuarrie, Todd McLeod and Stu Holland as confirmed mayoral candidates.
