KAMLOOPS — An overnight crime spree on the Kamloops North Shore Sunday has apparently been followed with another last night.

Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says Kamloops RCMP received a total of 16 reports of criminals targeting vehicles Sunday night, all coming from Carson Crescent or Mackenzie Avenue near McArthur Island.

In each case, the vehicle was either broken into or had its tires slashed.

Shelkie confirms RCMP have received another five reports of similar criminal activity this morning, and that number may grow.

In the latest spree, vehicles were targeted on Kelly Drive and Kenora Road, as well as one report on York Avenue near Schubert Drive.

Shelkie says it’s frustrating for both RCMP and the vehicles’ owners.

“It’s so hard to comprehend, both from the victim’s part, and from the police officer’s. We have no idea why people do it,” said Shelkie. “So that’s why it’s a very hard crime to prevent and solve, because is just total random acts of violence.”

Even so, Shelkie says there are some measures vehicle owners can take to minimize the risk of becoming victims.

“Do what you can by parking it in a well-lit area. Don’t park it behind shrubs or other objects that can offer concealment to suspects who may be breaking in or vandalizing it,” said Shelkie.

“Have a motion sensor light that turns on when someone approaches your vehicle. And also, just watch out for your neighbours.”
