WolfPack Women’s Soccer Blanked By MacEwan In Exhibition

The WolfPack dressed and played all 22 of their players as the coaching staff continues to evaluate talent.

TRU’s best scoring chances came late in the contest when Jollee Perrier (1st year, Penticton, BC) tipped a cross just wide of MacEwan keeper Emily Burns in the 75th minute. In the 83 rd minute, Madison Catt (1st year, Vernon, BC) got a chance at a loose rebound in the box before it was scooped up by Griffins keeper Tianna Groeneveld who played the final 14 minutes.

TRU head coach Kelly Shantz:

On game: “It was a good 4-0 game from the perspective that we played better for longer stretches than we did yesterday. We still had some mental errors. MacEwan is a good side. They punished us when we made three or four large errors in communication and awareness around our own goal. They have some good scorers. Around that, our team played very very well. Danielle Robertson started the game and played solid. Deanna Brady played the second and was consistent.

Players who stood out: We had three players who are new to the program played 90 minutes: Georgia Aldus and Gwen Freeze (both Kamloops, BC) played in the center of the defense. Camryn Curts (Courtenay, BC) played in the center of the midfield and was our player of the game. She was very strong. She had a very good day.”

What is next: “Back to the drawing board as we try and kick things up a notch before hosting Douglas College Wednesday and then off the States for our final two exhibition matches. We got lots out of the weekend. Got lot of opportunity to look at a lot of players and make some decisions before get closer to league play.”

MacEwan head coach Dean Cordiero:

On Contest:” Having four different goal scorers today helps. That’s by committee instead of one person scoring a bunch of goals, so that is very exciting. That’s what we are hoping for-get a lot of people contributing. Some of our top players controlled the tempo and made somep lays. We scored a couple goals that there were maybe four or vive passes that were strung prior and set up the hitter. The quality of some of the attacking patterns we were able to do..what we’ve been able to execute has looked good. We’re dominant on set pieces. So, we’re checking a lot of boxes right now. It is early. We aren’t getting ahead of ourselves. It’s more of an evaluation phase than anything right now, but we’re excited.”

Praises TRU: “Credit TRU-they came out really strong and it was a bit of a chess match in the first 20-25 minutes, but I think once we settled in, we started to take over the game a little bit.”

UP NEXT:

Next home exhibition match for the WolfPack will be Wednesday, August 23rd against the Douglas College Royals of New Westminster, BC (PACWEST).

They then will go to Washington State for exhibitions against Pacific Lutheran College (Aug 27) and Saint Martins University (Aug 26).

Thompson Rivers will open their 2017 Canada West season on the road with a game in Prince George on Friday, September 8th against UNBC. They then move to Edmonton, Alberta for a Sunday September 10th noon MDT kick off against the MacEwan University Griffins.

The WolfPack regular season home opener will be Saturday, September 23rd when the UBC Thunderbirds pay a visit to Hillside Stadium for a noon kickoff.
