IIO investigates case in Sicamous

SICAMOUS — The Independent Investigations Office is now involved in an RCMP case in Sicamous.
The IIO was called after police arrested a man who allegedly threatened to kill himself.
The incident began just before 11:30 Tuesday morning when Mounties were called to a car wash on Maier Road where a man was reported to be threatening to stab himself with a knife.
When police arrived, they found the man with what appeared to be self-inflicted wounds.
A news release from the IIO says the man then ran away from police while allegedly continuing to injure himself with a weapon.
A police officer ran after the man into a nearby gas station parking lot while telling to the man to drop the weapon.
The IIO says the officer did have a conducted energy weapon, or taser as it’s known, but did not use it.
The man eventually dropped to his knees and was taken into custody without further incident.
Police tended to the man’s wounds until Emergency Health Services arrived and the man was taken to hospital.
No one else was injured and the details of the man’s condition have not been released.
As per protocols, The Independent Investigations Office will now investigate whether there is a connection between the man’s injuries and the actions of police.
